License and Permit Essentials

Learner's Permit

Students seeking exemption from the RMV's motorcycle license road test (and related fees) must obtain a Massachusetts motorcycle learner's permit prior to the first session of a course.

The permit must not expire for at least three weeks following the class completion date. Before the first session, students will need to pay the up to $15 motorcycle endorsement fee or $50 motorcycle-only license fee. You can pay this fee at any RMV branch or online. You can access your profile from MYRMV site using the Access My Profile Button by clicking on this link: https://atlas-myrmv.massdot.state.ma.us/myrmv/_/.

Students must bring their learner's permit to the first session of the course. Upon successful completion of the course, students must continue to operate under the/cycle-only license or a new copy of their existing license with a motorcycle endorsement.

Students under the age of 18 who want to obtain a motorcycle endorsement must have completed the requirements for a JOL (Junior Operator's License) obtain a motorcycle permit and pass a road test. Students under the age of 18 who want to obtain a motorcycle (only) license must hold their motorcycle permit for 6 months before applying for a road test.

Once the motorcycle training school puts your information into the RMV system your license will be issued. You can verify this on your Profile. You should receive you new DM license in about 15 days. If not, contact your motorcycle training school.

Go to the RMV Service Center to get your Standard DM license.

If you currently do not have an active motorcycle permit or could not prove law presence or you could not pay your motorcycle endorsement fee online then you must visit a RMV Service Center.

You will need to complete an RMV application once you come to the RMV Service Center or you can complete the application online (MASSRMV.com, Forms and Manuals, Licensing Forms) and bring it with you.

If you do not have an active motorcycle permit, take the motorcycle permit test ($30.00), pay the motorcycle endorsement fee and prove lawful presence.

To see that you have completed motorcycle training in ATLAS, the clerk should:
1. Go to the Customer Spring Board (BLUE)
2. Click on the CRM tab
3. Click on the Indicators subtab
If you have an active motorcycle permit, proved Lawful Presence online, and completed motorcycle training, the clerk can process your DM license. Pay the fee (if any). The new motorcycle endorsement fee is prorated based on the time left on your Driver s License. For example, if you have 3 years remaining on the Driver's License, your endorsement fee would be $9.00 ($3.00 x 3 years = $9.00).

To get a REAL ID License you must visit a RMV Service Center

5. Follow the prompts (this will pre-stage your information into ATLAS). You must bring the documents you chose to the RMV.
6. Print the pre-stage document at the end of this process and bring it with you to the RMV. This will save you from needing to fill out an application when you get to the RMV. If you do not bring this paper, you will need to complete an application when you come to the RMV.

Go to the RMV Service Center for your REAL ID DM license.

Show the clerk the pre-stage document that you printed after you completed the Obtain REAL ID section online, along with the following required documents:
a. Social Security Document

c. 2 documents proving Massachusetts Residency
To see that you have completed motorcycle training in ATLAS, the clerk should:
1. Go to the Customer Spring Board (BLUE)

3. Click on the Indicators subtab
If you brought all of the documentation for REAL ID, you have an active motorcycle permit, and completed motorcycle training; the clerk can process your DM license. Pay the fee (if any). The new motorcycle endorsement fee is prorated based on the time left on your Drivers License. For example, if you have 3 years remaining on the Driver's License, your endorsement fee would be $9.00 ($3.00 x 3 years = $9.00).
